Famous Heritage Sites as Backdrop for the Festival
The town of Old Goa is ideal for Classical music, from its scenic beauty, its history as well also the large spaces and the acoustics of the heritage buildings. The place is so vibrant that one feels this could be the backstage for major artistic events. These sites are magnificent and the location is unique.
We have identified 3 locations very close to each other, suitable for a festival: .
The St. Monica convent, the largest Church structure of the 17th century in Asia (see below) which houses the Christian art Museum today and with the adjoining chapel which underwent restoration (see picture right).
Secondly the Chapel of Our Lady of Rosary (built 1540) at the edge of the hill, completely restored with a breathtaking view. And third is the main piece, the magnificent ruins of the St Augustine complex, where large open air concerts could take place.
Heritage Sites and their Utilization
The St. Augustine Complex Heritage site is being maintained by the ASI (Archeological Survey of India). As it is their policy to conserve the remains as naturally as possible without intervention, any commercial activities inclusive shooting films have been banned. However events which are in concordance with the history and spirit of the Heritage buildings will be welcomed. It is mentioned in their publication,
“ It was also envisaged that the site can have thematic music concerts which would match the setting of the historical ambience and also promote a cultural jugalbudi (fusion) where holding of the western and eastern cultural concerts can strengthen the international cultural divide between East and West and within the country between North and South. The same was experimented successfully during World Heritage Day celebrations 2006 by holding of a choir recital in the nave of the main church.” N.
